Buckles avled i söndags i sitt hem Charles Town, West Virginia. Han blev 110 år gammal och som ung ljög han om sin ålder för att få delta i kriget som 16-åring där han kom att tjänstgöra som ambulansförare efter att ha övertalat militärrekryterna om att han var tillräckligt gammal:
"I went to the state fair up in Wichita, Kansas, and while there, went to the recruiting station for the Marine Corps," sa han. "The nice Marine sergeant said I was too young when I gave my age as 18, said I had to be 21."
En vecka senare återvände han:
"I went back to the recruiting sergeant, and this time I was 21," he said with a grin. "I passed the inspection ... but he told me I just wasn't heavy enough."
Han försökte då ta sig in i flottan, men de ansåg att han var för plattfotad. Men han gav inte upp. I Oklahoma City krävde en kapten att få se hans födelsecertifikat när han ansökte.
"I told him birth certificates were not made in Missouri when I was born, that the record was in a family Bible. I said, 'You don't want me to bring the family Bible down, do you?'" Buckles said with a laugh. "He said, 'OK, we'll take you.'"
Buckles tvångsvärade således sig själv, skulle man kunna säga och körde ambulans under kriget även om han inte deltog på fronten. Men hans äventyr slutade inte med första världskriget - under andra världskriget satt han 3,5 år som japansk fånge på Filippinerna.
"I was never actually looking for adventure," Buckles once said. "It just came to me."
I en intervju häromåret sa han också om första världskriget:
"I knew there'd be only one (survivor) someday. I didn't think it would be me,"
Kvarvarande från första världskriget antas nu bara vara en 110-årig brittisk kvinna, och en 109-årig australiensisk man.
Frank Buckles har länge kämpat för att få se en minnesplats efter första världskriget i Washingon DC. Förhoppningsvis kommer hans dröm en dag att förverkligas.

A decorated soldier in the Great War, he also survived more than three years in Japanese prisoner of war camps during the Second World War.
Frank Buckles lived the American Century. Like so many veterans, he returned home, continued his education, began a career, and along with his late wife Audrey, raised their daughter Susannah. And just as Frank continued to serve America until his passing, as the Honorary Chairman of the World War I Memorial Foundation, our nation has a sacred obligation to always serve our veterans and their families as well as they’ve served us. We join Susannah and all those who knew and loved her father in celebrating a remarkable life that reminds us of the true meaning of patriotism and our obligations to each other as Americans.
